GRAND OPENING - COEUR D' ALENE (IDAHO) RAY & JOAN KROC CORPS COMMUNITY CENTER
Following the vision of Joan Kroc — who bequeathed $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army upon her passing in 2003 — the $35 million Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center opened in May. (An additional $35 million endowment will be used to offset operating costs.)
The 123,000-square-foot center includes multiple major components: an aquatics center, a fitness and recreation center, special event facilities, a center for worship and a performance hall. The aquatics center includes a 10-lane, 25-yard competition pool that is being used by four local high schools, and a separate 11,000-square-foot leisure pool. The fitness and recreation center features a multipurpose court with synthetic flooring, a 5,350-square-foot cardio and strength training area, an elevated track, a climbing wall and group exercise studios. The performance venue features seating for as many as 400 spectators, and other amenities include a teen game room, an arts and technology classroom, party rooms, a childcare area, an indoor playground, a cafe and a recording studio for community use.
